The paper is devoted to the solution of the following problem of diophantine approximation posed by G. J. Rieger: Let \(\theta_ 1\), \(\theta_ 2\) be any angles with \(\theta_ 1<\theta_ 2\leq \theta_ 1+\pi\), then does there exist a constant C such that for any complex number \(z\not\in {\mathbb{Q}}[i]\) there are infinitely many Gaussian rationals P/Q satisfying \(| z-P/Q|<C | Q|^{-2}, \theta_ 1<\arg(z-P/Q)<\theta_ 2\quad ?\) The authors show that the answer is affirmative and that \(C=3,6\cdot 10^ 5(\sin \theta /(1+\sin \theta))^{-2}\) (where \(\theta =(\theta_ 1-\theta_ 2)/2)\) is an admissible value for C. The argument of this very interesting paper is based on \textit{W. J. LeVeque'}s continued fraction algorithm for complex numbers [Indagationes Math. 14, 415-426, 526-535 and 536-545 (1952; Zbl 0047.052; Zbl 0048.279)].
