The author shows that if a nilpotent subspace A of the \(n\times n\) matrices over a field K satisfies the standard polynomial identity \(S_ d\), then \(\dim_ KA\leq(d-1)n^ 2/2d.\) The bound is sharp for any n, provided \(d\leq 7\). For each \(d>7\), the bound is attained for all n in an infinite proper subset of the natural numbers. When \(d>2\), there exist n and A so that the bound is achieved, but \(A^ d\neq 0\).
