    If \(\phi:[0,T]\times R^ 2\to [0,\infty)\) is continuous and \(\phi(t,x)\leq \epsilon \max \{| x_ 1|,| x_ 2| \}+\delta\) with \(\delta>0\) and \(\epsilon<1/\max \{T^ 2/8,T/2\},\) the author shows that the two-point BVP: \(v''+\phi(t,v,v')=f(t),t\in(0,T),v(0)=v(T)=0\) has a nonnegative solution whenever \(f\in C[0,T]\) is nonpositive. If \(Q\subset R^ n\) is a bounded domain with \(\partial Q\) smooth, \(\phi:\bar Q\times R^{n+1}\to [0,\infty)\) such that \(| \phi(t,x)-\phi(s,y)| \leq L(\| t- s\| +\| x-y\|)\) for some \(L>0\) and \(\phi(t,x)=o(\| x\|)\) as \(\| x\| \to \infty\) uniformly in \(t\in \bar Q\), the existence of a nonnegative solution \(v\in C^{2+\alpha}(\bar Q)\) of \(\Delta v+\phi(t,v,\nabla v)=f(t)\) in \(Q\), \(v|_{\partial Q}=0,\) is established whenever \(f\in C^{\alpha}(\bar Q)\) is nonpositive. The proofs are based on the surjectivity theorem of Granas for \(I-C\) with \(C\) compact of quasinorm \(<1\) and the Green function for the corresponding linear problem.
