Using the energy method due to \textit{J. Serrin} [in \textit{S. Flügge} (ed.), Encyclopedia of Physics VIII/1, (1959; Zbl 0102.405)] and \textit{D. D. Joseph} [Stability of fluid motions. II. (1976; Zbl 0345.76023)], the authors have studied the stability of the flow of a conducting fluid past a flat plate with suction and a transverse magnetic field. Considering disturbances which are periodic in the plane of the plate and integrable in the transverse direction they are able to derive sufficient condition for stability.
