Fuzzy system identification is an important but unsolved problem. This paper deals with the applications of probabilistic sets in fuzzy system identification and the design of fuzzy logic controllers. After having described some basic notions about probabilistic sets and summarized several results on the identification of fuzzy systems with the means of fuzzy relational equations, the authors present the methods of identification using probabilistic sets, and numerical examples with fuzzy and nonfuzzy data are given to illustrate the theory. The application of probabilistic sets in the synthesis of fuzzy controllers is discussed.
