In their earlier paper the authors presented a method of optimizing the formulation of constitutive laws of steady-rate creep together with its positive verification in the case of creep and vibrocreep in plane stress states [Bull. Acad. Pol. Sci., Sér. Sci. Tech. 30, 177-182 (1982; Zbl 0515.73039)]. In this paper the above method is further expanded and applied to the formulation of velocity potential of the first stage of creep. The sum of the squares of potential derivative differences is minimized instead of the sums of squares of the differences of velocity tensor components, and the optimization problem thus formulated is less vulnerable to the scatter of experimental data and, consequently, enables the determination of smooth time characteristics.
