Let V be a smooth complex projective threefold with Kodaira dimension \(\kappa\) (V)\(\geq 0\). A birationally equivalent projective threefold X is called a ''minimal model'' for V if it has only terminal singularities in the sense of Reid and the canonical \({\mathbb{Q}}\)-divisor \(K_ X\) is numerically effective (i.e. \(K_ X\cdot C\geq 0\) for every curve C on X). It is believed that such a minimal model should always exist, although it will not be unique. The paper under review considers the case when \(\kappa(V)=0.\) If V is irregular, then using the theory of the Albanese map it can be shown that V has a smooth minimal model X on which \(K_ X\) is numerically trivial. In particular we deduce from Riemann-Roch that \(\chi({\mathcal O}_ V)=-K_ X\cdot c_ 2(X)/24=0.\) There are however many examples of regular threefolds V with \(\kappa(V)=0\) and \(\chi({\mathcal O}{}_ V)\neq 0\) (e.g. the Kummer threefold). The main result of the paper shows that if V has a Gorenstein minimal model, then the arithmetic genus \(\chi\) (\({\mathcal O}_ V)\) must be zero. In particular, in the case when V is regular (the interesting case), V has birational invariants \(p_ g(V)=1\) and \(h^ 2({\mathcal O}_ V)=0\). The method of proof is based on considering the stability of the sheaf of regular 1-forms \(\Omega^ 1_ X\) on X when restricted down to general hyperplane sections.
