The author gives a generalization of the notion of semigroup cohomologies, viz. partial cohomologies, which are defined on subsets of Cartesian powers of a semigroup and some applications. In the first section the construction of an auxiliary category of partial modules over a semigroup is contained, in the second the partial cohomologies are defined and some of their properties are studied. \textit{B. Mitchell} [J. Algebra 9, 314-340 (1968; Zbl 0164.014)] introduced the construction of a partially free monoid and proved that the cohomological dimension of such monoids is not greater than 1, and put the following question: if M is a cancellative monoid having cohomological dimension \(\leq 1\), is then M a partially free monoid? As an application of considerations of the former two parts of the present work, in the third section the author gives a negative answer to Mitchell's problem; and puts the following one: If M is a cancellative monoid having cohomological dimension \(\leq 1\), is it possible to imbed M in a free group?
