A nonlinear finite element method is presented for the computation of the large deflection of an inextensible rod bent beyond the linear elastic range of its material. An orthogonal trajectory accession method is used to trace the displacement-load curves for a rod flexed by an axial force, a circular ring crushed by diametrical forces, a C-ring opened by an end force, and a column collapsing under its own weight.
