The fundamental theorem of L. Schwartz on mean-periodic functions of one variable states that every closed, translation invariant subspace of the space of continuous functions on R is spanned by the polynomial- exponential functions it contains. By duality, this theorem provides a characterization of all closed ideals in the ring of entire functions of exponential type which have polynomial growth on R. It turns out that Schwartz's theorem is intimately connected to the so- called Pompeiu and Morera problems and to the ''two circles theorem'' of L. Zalcman for entire functions and of J. Delsarte for harmonic functions. The main goal of the authors is to extend this theorem for mean-periodic vector valued functions in \(C(R,C^ N)\). They obtain the analogue of Schwartz's theorem in spectral analysis for each \(N>1.\) For \(N=2\), Schwartz's theorem in spectral synthesis is verified, providing the characterization of all submodules of \(C^ 2\)-valued entire functions of exponential type which have polynomial growth on R. The authors show that every translation-invariant and rotation-invariant closed subspace of \(C(R^ m,C^ N)\), \(m\geq 2\), contains a vector valued exponential function. For \(N=1\) their method provides a new proof to a result announced by L. Brown, B. M. Schreiber and B. A. Taylor. By applying this theorem to the vector valued Pompeiu and Morera problems the authors obtain some analogues of L. Zalcman's and J. Delsarte's ''two circles theorems'' for vector valued functions. In section 3 they obtain Schwartz's theorem in spectral analysis for \(C(R,C^ N)\) and show that spectral analysis holds for \(C(R^ m,C^ N)\), \(m\geq 2\), if one also allows invariance under rotations. In section 4 they obtain some vector valued results concerning Pompeiu and Morera problems and the ''two circle theorems'' of Zalcman and Delsarte. Finally, in section 5 the authors study the structure of closed submodules of \(\hat {\mathcal E}'(R,C^ N)\).
