The weighting function of the streamline-upwind/Petrov-Galerkin method contains a coefficient which has the dimension of time and is a function of element parameters (e.g. element dimension, element Peclet number, etc.). In this paper a formula for the coefficient applicable to linear triangular elements is presented. The formula does not consist of the individual element parameters but rather of the element matrices only, and so it is not only simple but also cost-effective. The validity of the formula is shown by several test problems and numerical examples.
