This excellent paper gives both an overview and some new approaches of multivariable adaptive control. A common thread throughout this paper is the development of algorithms using pole assignment ideas. This paper focuses on parametrization issues only while stability is not addressed. This paper aims at (1) the type of control structure, (2) prior knowledge regarding the unknown process and (3) the reduction of the number of parameters to be estimated. After introducing mathematical notations, Section 3 presents the process model. Section 4 presents a number of fixed pole assignment control for known plants. Section 5 gives an overview on multivariable adaptive control by direct methods. Deadbeat and model matching problems are first introduced, including the case when the interactor is unknown. Arbitrary pole placement control is then given. Section 6 is parallel to section 5 but gives new algorithms for indirect methods. Section 7 discusses parameter reduction.
