A finite dimensional algebra A over a field is said to be QF-1 if every faithful representation of A coincides with its own second commutator. \textit{R. M. Thrall} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 64, 173-183 (1948; Zbl 0041.010)] asked for an internal description of QF-1 algebras. The purpose of the paper is to give a solution of Thrall's problem for the case of algebras of local-colocal type, i.e. algebras each of whose indecomposable modules has either a unique maximal submodule or a unique minimal submodule. The author gives five conditions by which QF-1 algebras of local-colocal type are characterized. One of these conditions means that serial modules which appear as the radicals of certain primitive ideals are proper homomorphic images of some serial modules. All the other conditions say that subquotients (mainly composition factors) of a certain kind of primitive ideal or its dual are embedded into the regular module.
