Let \(\Omega\) be a non-eympty, open, convex subset of \(R^ n\) (\(n\geq 3)\) and let \(K(\Omega)\) denote the class of all convex bodies contained in \(\Omega\). A capacity \(\mu\) in \(\Omega\) is called :\(\alpha\) :-concave, where \(-\infty\leq \alpha <\infty\), if \(\mu (\lambda A+(1-\lambda)B)\geq (\lambda\mu^{\alpha}(A)+(1-\lambda)\mu^{\alpha}(B))^{1/\alpha}\) for all A,\(B\in K(\Omega)\) and all \(\lambda \in (0,1)\). The main purpose of the paper is to show how :\(\alpha\) :-concave capacities can be built up from Newtonian capacity \(c_ n\), in much the same way as :\(\alpha\) :- concave measures can be constructed from Lebesgue measure. Let \(u_ a^{\Omega}\) be the equilibrium potential of \(A\in K(\Omega)\) relative to \(\Omega\). The inequality of the title states that if \(x_ i\in R^ n\) and \(A_ i\in K(\Omega_ i)\) for \(i=0,1\) and \(0<\lambda <1\), then \(u_{A_{\lambda}}^{\Omega_{\lambda}}(x_{\lambda})\geq u_{A_ 0}^{\Omega_ 0}(x_ 0)\wedge u_{A_ 1}^{\Omega_ 1}(x_ 1),\) where \(\xi_{\lambda}=(1-\lambda)\xi_ 0+\lambda\xi_ 1\) for points or sets \(\xi_ 0\), \(\xi_ 1\). From this it follows that \(c_ n^{1/(n-2)}(A+B)\geq c_ n^{1/(n-2)}(A)+c_ n^{1/(n-2)}(B)\) for all \(A,B\in K(R^ n)\), which is the key inequality required to establish the :\(\alpha\) :-concavity of a large class of capacities.
