A necessary condition for the hypoellipticity of second-order equations with alternating characteristic form (Q798505)

A necessary condition for the hypoellipticity of a second order differential operator with real-valued coefficients and alternating characteristic form is proved. The result obtained here is based on some properties of the Dirichlet problem for operators with non-negative quadratic part. When establishing the main theorem the author develops an idea proposed at first in [\textit{A. Nagel} and \textit{E. M. Stein}, Lectures on pseudodifferential operators: Regularity theorems and applications to non-elliptic problems (1979; Zbl 0415.47025)].
