The author considers the first order linear differential operator \(L=d/dx+\sum^{n}_{j=0}A_ j\lambda^ j+B\lambda^{n+1}\) where \(A_ j\) are matrices, B is a constant diagonal matrix and \(\lambda\) a parameter. The purpose of the paper is to analyse Hamiltonian structure and equations of Lax type which arise in connection with the operator L. Since the case \(n=0\) is well-known the main contribution of this paper is to give a detailed account in case \(n>1\). Some of his results are connected with the Zakharov-Shabat equations. The author uses the framework of Lie algebras and the corresponding variational formulation of the problem.
