The article is written as an exposition of recent development of the theory of the class of completely bounded maps between \(C^*\)-algebras. It mainly consists of the review of those results, together with relevant discussions, in the papers by \textit{G. Wittstock} [J. Funct. Anal. 40, 127-150 (1981; Zbl 0495.46005)], \textit{V. I. Paulsen} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 86, 91-96 (1982)], \textit{R. R. Smith} [J. London Math. Soc., II. Ser. 27, 157-166 (1983; Zbl 0527.46052)] and by the author's joint work with \textit{T. Huruya} [J. Oper. Theory 10, 141-152 (1983; Zbl 0517.46043)]. Several new results about the growth condition of the multiplicity maps such as when \(\|\tau_ n\| =\|\tau \|_{cb}\) for every map \(\tau\) between \(C^*\)-algebras are added, where n is a fixed integer and \(\|\tau \|_{cb}=\sup_{k\geq 1}\|\tau_ k\|\).
