There is a theorem of A. Connes as follows. Let \(\phi_ 0\) be a faithful normal semifinite weight on a von Neumann algebra M. Let \(\{U_ t\}_{t\in {\mathbb{R}}}\) be a strongly continuous one parameter family of unitaries in M satisfying the cocycle condition with respect to the modular automorphism group \(\{\tau_ t^{\phi_ 0}\}_{t\in {\mathbb{R}}}\) associated with the weight \(\phi_ 0\) i.e. \(U_{s+t}=U_ s\tau_ s^{\phi_ 0}(U_ t),\quad s,t\in {\mathbb{R}}.\) Then there exists a unique faithful normal semifinite weight \(\phi\) on M satisfying \((D\phi:D\phi_ 0)_ t=U_ t,\quad t\in {\mathbb{R}}.\) In this paper, we give an alternative proof of the above theorem by giving an explicit description of \(\phi\) on a left Hilbert algebra using \(\{U_ t\}_{t\in {\mathbb{R}}}\). We can also prove the theorem for non- faithful \(\phi\) using the theorem for faithful \(\phi\). This statement has already been proved in the appendix B of [\textit{H. Araki} and the author, ibid. 18, 759-831 (1982; Zbl 0505.46046)] in the reference of this paper.
