In ''A common characterization of finite projective spaces and affine planes'' [Eur. J. Comb. 2, 213-219 (1981; Zbl 0473.05014)] \textit{A. Beutelspacher} and \textit{A. Delandtsheer} classified the finite linear spaces satisfying the following condition: (D2) there is an integer \(d_ 2\) such that for any two disjoint lines L, L' and any point x outside \(L\cup L'\), there are exactly \(d_ 2\) lines through x intersecting the two lines L and L'. Analogous conditions can be obtained from (D2) by replacing ''intersecting the two lines L and L''' by ''intersecting L but not L''' or by ''disjoint from L and L'''. These two conditions are denoted by (D1) and (D0) respectively. In ''A classification of finite 2-fold Bolyai-Lobachevski spaces'' [Geom. Dedicata 14, 375-393 (1983; Zbl 0531.51015)] the author determines all finite linear spaces satisfying (D0) with \(d_ 0>0\). Here she obtains the following theorem. Theorem. If S is a finite non-trivial linear space satisfying (D1) with \(d_ 1\) denoting the constant number of lines through x and intersecting L but not L', then one of the following occurs: (i) S is an affine plane, an affine plane with one point at infinity, a punctured projective plane or a (possibly degenerate) projective plane, (ii) S is a 3-dimensional projective space \(PG(3,d_ 1)\), (iii) S is a 3-dimesional generalized projective space consisting of the union of two disjoint lines, all the other lines having size 2, (iv) S is a degenerate projective space PG(d,1) all of whose lines have size 2 (with \(d\geq 2)\). Conversely, each of these finite spaces satisfies condition (D1).
