This is the second part of the author's paper [see the preceding review]. Here, the main object is the so-called \({\mathcal C}\)-spectral sequence \(E_ r^{p,q}\) which is associated with a system of nonlinear partial differential equations \({\mathcal Y}\) and converges to \(H^*({\mathcal Y}_{\infty})\), \({\mathcal Y}_{\infty}\) being the infinite prolongation of Y. The calculation of the \({\mathcal C}\)-spectral sequence of the trivial equation \(0=0\) gives a solution of the inverse problem of the calculus of variations (obtained independently by \textit{F. Takens} [J. Differ. Geom. 14, 543-562 (1979; Zbl 0463.58015)] as well as of that of trivial densities. The calculation of \(E_ 1^{p,q}\) for a nontrivial equation Y gives a tool for finding the conservation laws of Y (see an example in the article by the author and \textit{T. Tsujishita} [J. Phys. A 17, 3267-3276 (1984)]), helps to tackle the inverse problem of the calculus of variations in the situation with constraints (and solve it completely, e.g., in case of the homogeneous equation Y), and provides a far-going generalization of the Noether theorem for arbitrary Y.
