This book provides a comprehensive treatment of discrete-time dynamical systems. The material included is organized in eight chapters. First, a number of discrete-time models taken from various fields are presented to motivate the reader. The main body of the book is split into three parts: Analysis, Control and Optimization. Part I on analysis covers different types of representation of discrete- time systems, using transfer functions, difference equations, discrete state equations and modal decomposition. Also included is a chapter on structural properties such as controllability, observability and stability. Various control concepts are outlined in part II, including linear state and output feedback, deadbeat control, control design based on reduced model, as well as control systems with slow and fast modes. A chapter on control of systems with inaccessible states treats methods of state reconstruction and observer-based control. Part III on optimization provides a deep insight into state and parameter estimation techniques, adaptive control via model reference and self- tuning approaches as well as dynamic optimization techniques for discrete dynamical systems. Both the standard techniques as well as their extension to large systems are examined. Throughout the book many worked-out examples are provided to illustrate the concepts and methods. Problems (without solutions) are given at the end of each chapter. The book has been designed to serve as a text for teaching at the first year graduate level and should prove valuable also for research to engineers and practitioners.
