Let \(f:R^ n\to R^ n\) be locally quasiregular, i.e. \(| f'(x)|^ n\leq K(r)J(x,f)\) for a.e. x, \(| x| <r\). Using the fact that each coordinate function of f is an extremal of an variational integral associated with f, see \textit{S. Granlund}, the author and the reviewer [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 277, 43-73 (1983; Zbl 0518.30024)], the author proves: The condition \(\int^{\infty}dr/rK(r)^{1/(n-1)}=\infty\) implies that f is a constant provided that some coordinate function of f is bounded from below. It was proved by \textit{Yu. G. Reshetnyak} [Sib. Mat. Zh. 9, 652-666 (1968; Zbl 0162.382)] and by the reviewer, \textit{S. Rickman} and \textit{J. Väisälä} [Ann. Acad. Sci. Fenn., Ser. A I 465, 13 p. (1970; Zbl 0197.057)] that this holds whenever K(r) is bounded. \textit{V. Zorich} [Dokl. Akad. Nauk. SSSR 181, 530-533 (1968; Zbl 0184.108)] has studied a similar question for locally homeomorphic quasiregular mappings. His method was different.
