This paper establishes properties of the equilibrium points of the nonlinear system \(du_ j/dt=A_ j(u_ 1,...,u_ n)-\mu u^ 2_ j, j=1,...,n\), where the \(A_ j(u)\) are quadratic forms with nonnegative coefficients and \(\mu \geq 0\). The equations \(du_ j/dt=0\) are converted to the nonlinear algebraic eigenvalue problem \(H(u)=\lambda u\), \(u\in {\mathbb{R}}^ n\); \(H:{\mathbb{R}}^ n\to {\mathbb{R}}^ n\) and the (nondiscrete) spectrum of this problem is described. A particular case of H being homogeneous is examined. The bifurcation diagram is completely described but not drawn explicitly. In particular it shows that there is at least one negative eigenvalue with a non-negative eigenvector and that there is a maximal eigenvalue. The latter part of the paper is concerned with the nonhomogeneous problem \(\lambda x-H(x)=c\), where \(c\geq 0\). Conditions are given for when this problem is solvable even when \(\lambda\) is an eigenvalue of the previous problem.
