The influence of a plane gravitational wave on a self-gravitating elastic sphere without rotation is considered in Newtonian approximation. The equations governing the elastic oscillations are determined within the framework of the general relativity. Moreover dissipative processes are taken into account by using a simple relativistic model of viscoelasticity. In the case of wavelengths much larger than the diameter of the sphere, the equations are transformed into the form of those of \textit{N. Ashby} and \textit{J. Dreitlein} derived previously [Phys. Rev., Ser. D 12, 336 ff. (1975)]. The equations governing the elastic oscillations are also determined within the framework of the Brans-Dicke scalar-tensor theory of gravitation.
