A matrix A is called J-expansive if and only if \(A^*JA-J\geq 0\), where \(A^*\) denotes the Hermitian conjugate of A. The author establishes a necessary and sufficient condition for Darlington realization [see \textit{D. Z. Arov}, Izv. Akad. Nauk SSSR, Ser. Mat. 37, 1299-1331 (1973; Zbl 0316.30036)] of a J-expansive matrix-valued function. This result provides a procedure to synthesize linear passive 2n-ports and, in particular, allows to solve the Darling realizations of transfer-scattering matrices of linear 4n-ports without losses. We recall that a transfer-scattering matrix T(p) of a linear passive 2n-port is a real rational matrix-valued function of order 2n, j-expansive in the right half of the complex plane \(Re p>0,\) i.e. \((i)\quad T^*(p)jT(p)-j\geq 0\) in \(Re p>0,\quad (ii)\quad\overline{T(\bar p)}=T(p)\) in \(Re p>0\); for a 2n-port without losses, T(p) satisfies the additional condition \((iii)\quad T^*(p)jT(p)-j=0\) in \(Re p=0.\)
