The nonlinear wave equation \((1)\quad U_{tt}-U_{xx}+g(U)=f(x,t), 0<x<\pi,\quad t\in {\mathbb{R}}, U(0,t)=U(\pi,t)\quad\forall t\in {\mathbb{R}}\) is considered, where U(x,t), f(x,t) are 2\(\pi\) -periodic with respect to t. The function g(U) increases faster than \(\lambda_ 1U\), but slower than \(\lambda_ 2U\), where \(\lambda_ 1\) and \(\lambda_ 2\) are the moduli of two neighbouring negative spectral points of the operator \(\square\). It is proved that for every \(f\in L_ 2(\Omega) (\Omega\equiv (0,\pi)\times (0,2\pi))\) there exists \(U\in L_ 2(\omega),\) which is a weak solution for the problem (1). Also, if \(f\in L_ 2(\Omega)\), then \(U\in L_{\infty}(\Omega)\) is shown. This paper generalizes results of Nirenberg and Brezis.
