Local reflexivity says roughly that the bidual \(X^{**}\) of a Banach space X is finitely representable (has nearly the same finite dimensional subspaces (within \(1+\epsilon\), for all \(\epsilon >0))\) in X. Additional conditions can be put on these near isometries \(T_ F:F\to X,\) where F is a finite dimensional subspace of \(X^{**}\). For example, the original local reflexivity result noted that \(T_ F\) could be taken to be the identity on \(F\cap X\). The results here have two collections of additional conditions on \(T_ F:\) (1) we can handle many (semi-) norms at once, and (2) we can require certain ''subspace restrictions''. An example of (2) is if \(F\subset X^{**}\oplus Y^{**}=(X\oplus Y)^{**}\) we can require \(T_ F(X^{**}\cap F)\subset X\) and \(T_ F(Y^{**}\cap F)\subset Y.\) These ''restrictions'' are more general and in particular they work for quotients as well. The ability to handle several norms at once allows us to talk about local reflexivity of operators and Fréchet spaces. For example if \(T:X\to Y\) is a map between Banach spaces with a non-weakly compact operator finitely representable in T, then T maps a near square to a near square (i.e. there are x,y\(\in X\) with \(\| x\| =\| y\| \sim \| (x+y)\| /2\sim \| x- y\| /2\) and \(\| Tx\| \sim \| Ty\| \sim \| T(x+y)\| /2\sim \| T(x-y)\| /2.\) These results also yield conditional basic sequences in Fréchet spaces that require maps like T in their spectrum.
