Model problems are defined and solved to help understand the viscoelastic flow problem in two dimensions. Steady-state solutions are found for a variety of meshes and fluid models for the 4:1 axisymmetric contraction problem and some of these give rise to valid bifurcations. Transient analyses confirm the stability of the steady-state solutions.
