Some results on quantifiers (Q801899)

The author studies quantifiers in the sense of \textit{J. Barwise} and \textit{R. Cooper} [Linguist. Philos. 4, 159-219 (1981; Zbl 0473.03033)], extending techniques and results of \textit{J. F. A. K. van Benthem} [J. Symb. Logic 49, 443-466 (1984)]. Most of the results deal with combinations of such properties of determiners as reflexivity, symmetry, transitivity, circularity, continuity and monotonicity. By representing quantifiers as relations on the natural numbers, the author gives a characterization of first-order definable quantifiers in terms of their monotonicity properties. For monotonicity and first-order definability of generalized quantifiers in the sense of \textit{A. Mostowski} and \textit{P.
