This paper is concerned with the problem of maintenance of some property (P) of the second order differential equation \((E,\tau)Ly=(a(t)y'(t))'+p(t)f(y(\tau (t)))=0\), \(t\geq t_ 0\) where a is a continuous and positive function and p is a continuous and nonnegative function, which is eventually nonzero, and the corresponding inequality yLy\(\leq 0\), under the effect of advanced (\(\tau\) (t)\(\geq t)\) and mixed (\(\tau\) (t)\(\to \infty\) as \(t\to \infty)\) argument. Here (P) means oscillation or specific asymptotic behavior of the considered equation and inequality. This is a natural continuation of a recent paper of the present author and \textit{M. K. Grammatikopoulos} [Ukr. Mat. Zh. 36, 437- 443 (1984)], concerning the retarded argument. It is worth noting that the retarded case is remarkably different from the case of advanced argument. A typical result is the following: Suppose that \(\tau\) is a nondecreasing advanced argument for all large t. If \(\int^{\infty}1/a=\infty\) and \(\int^{\pm \infty}_{\pm 1}1/f<\infty\), then it does not effect the oscillation of our equation i.e. the considered equation is oscillatory if and only if the corresponding ordinary differential equation is oscillatory. Further some comparison theorems concerning the oscillation of the considered equation and corresponding ordinary equation, which have independent interest, are presented. For instance the following result is obtained: Consider the differential equations (E,\(\tau)\) and (E,t) subject to the conditions \(\int^{\infty}1/a<\infty\) and \(\int_{\pm 0}1/f<\infty\). If \(\tau\) is an advanced argument, then if (E,\(\tau)\) is oscillatory (E,t) is oscillatory too.
