The equation solver with two-level indexing of random access disc file, described in this paper, intends to be an efficient tool for the solution of large banded linear equation systems with symmetric coefficient matrix. Basic features of a FORTRAN program developed for Control Data computers are discussed. Operational memory demand is considerably reduced but the application of the presented algorithm is limited to equation systems with a narrow nonzero band.
