A general nonlinear theory of rods based on a one-dimensional continuum model of a Cosserat curve is derived. Together with the general case a class of constrained theories is developed in which one or more of the effects of the following three types of motion are retained: a) normal cross-sectional extension, b) ''transverse'' shear deformation in the direction along the rod axis, c) shear deformation of the cross-section. The governing equations of the simplest case of the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory (3 motions neglected) and six other less restrictive variants are presented.
