    It is shown that for a given flow rate (for which the uniform state is stable), more and more cross-channel modes become unstable with increasing bed width. (These observations are in accordance with earlier work). For the case, Froude number \(R\ll 1\), the resulting Fourier series is summed numerically. It is observed that the motion is one dimensional for narrow beds while increase in bed width results in cross-stream variations becoming more dominant.
