Dynamic models are discussed for a material and energy balance of chemical-engineering systems that evaluate the state of the system by employing redundant temporal and spatial information obtained from measurements of the engineering parameters. The observability and applicability of the models for indirect measurements has been analyzed. A correlation has been demonstrated between the observability of the system and the structure of its flow sheet and the distribution of measurement points. Some generalizations of the dynamic balance model are made.
