The author considers the question of pole assignment for a class of distributed systems by means of finite dimensional control. She treats spectral systems as these have useful mathematical properties and at the same time include most distributed systems. She derives explicit formulas for the new eigenvalues of the distributed system coupled with a compensator designed from a reduced order model. For the single input- single output case she clarifies the problem of predicting the spillover effect for an arbitrary reduced-order model. For the particular reduced order model design she derives useful a priori estimates on the spillover for all modes. The estimates enable one to understand the trade-offs between desired stability, compensator poles and gains and the order of the compensator.
