\textit{A. Conte} and \textit{J.-P. Murre} have proved that a generic quartic threefold of \({\mathbb{P}}^ 4\) containing one double line is not rational [Indagationes Math. 39, 145-160, 161-175 (1977; Zbl 0353.14016)]. The main result of this paper is that a generic quartic threefold of \({\mathbb{P}}^ 4\) containing two skew double lines is also not rational. The case of such a threefold containing n planes with all possible configurations is studied and the rationality problem is solved.
