A group G is said to be an I\({\mathfrak X}\)-group if it is not an \({\mathfrak X}\)-group, but G/N is an \({\mathfrak X}\)-group for every infinite normal subgroup N of G; here \({\mathfrak X}\) is any class of groups. The author studies soluble I\({\mathfrak X}\)-groups when \({\mathfrak X}\) is the class of polycyclic groups or the class of Chernikov groups. Characterizations of these classes of groups are obtained.
