Second-order digital filters are studied for realization with a minimum number of noninteger elements in the system matrix. It is proven that if the poles are inside the unit circle then there does not exist a realization with all integers. Several realizations are obtained with one noninteger element in the system matrix with some restrictions on pole placement. Some general relationships between the poles and the existence of these realizations are established. However, the relationship between these realizations and limit cycles have not been established.
