Let \(\Gamma\) be a finite group acting faithfully on a smooth irreducible curve C defined over an algebraically closed field k. Let l be a prime number distinct from char(k). This paper studies the decomposition of \(H^ 1(C,F_ l)\) into a direct sum of indecomposable \(F_ i[\Gamma]\)- modules where \(\Gamma =SL(2,F_ l)/\pm 1\) and l is an odd prime. In this case, an explicit decomposition is obtained. In particular, when \(C=X(l)\) is the compactification of the moduli space of complex elliptic curves of level l, the decomposition formula reflects the relationship among the genus of X(l), the number of cusps of X(l) and the dimensions of spaces of higher weight cusp forms on X(l).
