    The author considers Schrödinger operators with magnetic fields \[ L=- \sum^{n}_{j=1}(\partial_ j-ib_ j)^ 2+V, \] where \(\partial_ j=\partial /\partial x_ j\) and \(b_ j\), V are operators of multiplication by real-valued functions on \({\mathbb{R}}^ n\). V and \(b=(b_ 1,...,b_ n)\) are called scalar potential and vector potential, respectively. The corresponding magnetic field is the skew symmetric matrix-valued function \(B=curl b\) with the components \[ B_{jk}=\partial_ jb_ k-\partial_ kb_ j;\quad j,k=1,...,n, \] where the magnitude of B(x) is defined by \(| B(x)| =\{\sum_{j<k}B_{jk}(x)^ 2\}^{1/2}.\) The author shows: If V(x), \(b_ j(x)\) are real-valued \(C^{\infty}\) functions on \({\mathbb{R}}^ n\) and there exists a continuous non-decreasing function Q(r) for \(r\in [0,\infty)\) such that \[ V(x)+| B(x)| \geq -Q(| x|)\text{ for } x\in {\mathbb{R}}^ n,\quad \{\frac{| \partial^{\alpha}B_{jk}(x)|}{| B(x)| +1}\}^{3-| \alpha |}\leq Q(| x|) \] for \(x\in {\mathbb{R}}^ n\), \(j,k=1,...,n\), \(| \alpha | =1,2\), \(\int^{\infty}_{0}Q(r)^{- 1/2}dr=\infty,\) then the restriction \(L_ 0\) of L with domain \(D(L_ 0)=C^{\infty}_ 0({\mathbb{R}}^ n)\) is essentially selfadjoint as an operator in \(L^ 2({\mathbb{R}}^ n)\).
