The well-posedness and regularity of mixed initial-boundary value problems for constant-coefficient strictly hyperbolic equations in a quarter plane is studied. The wave equation with mixed Dirichlet-Neumann boundary conditions where a smooth compact manifold divides the boundary into two regions is introduced to serve as an example. Existence and uniqueness theorems are proved for a large class of such problems for equations of arbitrary order. These are based on the study of a new class of pseudo-differential operators which could be called hyperbolic pseudo- differential operators. Optimal estimates are obtained in multi-indexed Sobolev spaces.
