Let I be a proper real interval with \(0\not\in I\); if a function f: \(I\to {\mathbb{R}}\) is continuous on I and differentiable on \(int I,\) then for every x,y\(\in I\), \(x\neq y\), there exists a point \(\zeta\) between x and y such that \[ \frac{xf(y)-yf(x)}{x-y}=f(\zeta)-\zeta f'(z). \] The relation above, due to \textit{D. Pompeiu} [Mathematika, Timişoara 22, 143-146 (1946; MR 8, 15)], can be read as a functional equation with unknown f and given \(\zeta\). The author studies and completely solves, without any regularity assumption on f and \(\phi\), the equation \[ \frac{xf(y)-yf(x)}{x-y}=\phi [\zeta (x,y)], \] where \(\zeta\) (x,y) is quasiarithmetic mean of x and y. The results generalize those of a previous paper of \textit{J. Aczél} and the author [Aequationes Math. 38, No.2/3, 216-235 (1989; Zbl 0688.39006)].
