Let Q be a densely defined symmetric operator and let \(U_ x\) be a strongly continuous unitary group on a Hilbert space H such that \(U_ x dom Q\subseteq dom Q\) and that \(U_ xQU^*_ x\phi =Q\phi -x\phi\) for \(\phi\in dom Q\). Usng theory of \textit{M. A. Naimark} [Istv. Akad. Nauk SSSR 7, 285-296 (1943; Zbl 0061.260)] concerning the spectral functions of a symmetric operator, the author proves that Q admits a resolution \(Q=\int xF[dx]\) with a positive operator valued measure satisfying \(U_ xF[\sigma]U^*_ x=F[\alpha -x]\) and there are a Hilbert space \(\hat H\supset H\), a selfadjoint operator \(\hat Q\) and a unitary group \(\hat U_ x\) on \(\hat H\) such that \(\hat U_ x\upharpoonright H=U_ x\) and \(\hat Q\upharpoonright dom Q=q\) and \(\hat U_ x\hat Q\hat U^*_ x{\hat \phi}=\hat Q{\hat \phi}-x{\hat \phi}\) for \({\hat \phi}\in dom \hat Q\). The case where \(Q_ 1,...,Q_ n\) are symmetric operators defined on a common dense domain in a Hilbert space is also considered.
