If K is a convex body in Euclidean space \(E^ d\), \(W_ i\) is its i th quermassintegral and r its inradius, then it is known that \(W_{d-2}- rW_{d-1}\geq 0,\) with equality if and only if K is a cap body of its inscribed ball. The author proves a corresponding stability result. If \(W_{d-2}-rW_{d-1}<\epsilon\) for some \(\epsilon >0\), then there exists a cap body, C, of the ball of radius \(r+\phi\) and concentric with the inball, such that the Hausdorff distance of K and C is less than \(\epsilon\) ; the number \(\phi\) (given explicitly) can be estimated by \(cr^{d-2}\epsilon \leq \phi^ d\leq c(2R)^{d-2}\epsilon\), where R is the circumradius of K and the constant c depends only on the dimension. The result is used in dimension three to establish a weak stability result for the equality \(W^ 2_ 1-W_ 0W_ 2=0,\) also known to characterize cap bodies of balls.
