Let F be a p-adic number field and n be an integer not divisible by p. The main topic of the paper is the set of irreducible representations of dimension dividing n of the Weil group \(W_ F.\) On one hand, \textit{H. Koch} and \textit{E.-W. Zink} [Math. Nachr. 98, 83-119 (1980; Zbl 0475.12024)] have shown that there is a bijection between this set and the set of irreducible representations of the multiplicative group \(D^{\times}\) of any central division algebra D of index n over F; on the other hand \textit{R. E. Howe} [Pac. J. Math. 73, 437-460 (1977; Zbl 0404.22019)] constructed a map from the set of irreducible n-dimensional representations of \(W_ F\) to the set of supercuspidal representations of \(Gl_ n(F)\), which was shown to be a bijection by \textit{A. Moy} [Am. J. Math. 108, 863-929 (1986; Zbl 0597.12019)]. The first purpose of the paper is to present a simplified construction of the correspondence in the division algebra case, via admissible pairs consisting of a tamely ramified extension K/F of degree n and a character of \(K^ x\) satisfying certain technical conditions, and to give an analogous construction in the matrix algebra case. Bijectivity of these correspondences is not proven in the present paper, but the author points out that his presentation in the matrix algebra case allows Moy's proof of the bijectivity to carry over in the case \(p=2\), which had to be excluded in Moy's original paper. In subsequent sections, modifications of the above correspondences designed to make them canonical in the sense of Langlands' philosophy are discussed. These mofidications (twists with tame characters) use a simplified version of methods of Bushnell and Fröhlich; they apply in the division algebra case as well as in the matrix algebra case, although the modifications are different. The author also shows that the earlier attempts by Moy (loc. cit.) at similar modifications in the matrix algebra case were flawed. In the final section, the functoriality properties of the correspondences thus obtained are described in a particularly simple form in terms of the Weil-Deligne group \(W'_ F\) instead of \(W_ F\).
