Generalizing her earlier result [Boll. Unione Mat. Ital., VII. Ser., A 3, No.2, 155-162 (1989; Zbl 0679.20020)] the author proves the following theorem. Let G be a finite group having an automorphism of prime order r whose centralizer in G is contained in the Frattini subgroup of a nilpotent subgroup H of G such that H is invariant under this automorphism and r is not a divisor of the order of H. If the order of H is odd or r is not a Fermat prime then G is nilpotent. The author first proves this for a finite solvable group and then removes the hypothesis of solvability of G by using the classification of finite simple groups.
