The initial value problem (1) \(\dot y\) \((\equiv dy/dt)={\mathbb{V}}(y)\), \(y(0)=x\in {\mathbb{F}}^ n\) (\({\mathbb{F}}\) is \({\mathbb{R}}\) or \({\mathbb{C}})\), where \({\mathbb{V}}\) is a continuously differentiable vector field on \({\mathbb{F}}^ n\) is considered. The flow \(\phi: \Omega\to {\mathbb{R}}^ n\) is said to be a polynomial flow and \({\mathbb{V}}\) is said to be a p-f vector field if for each t \({\mathbb{R}}\) the t-advanced map \(\phi^ t: U^ t\to {\mathbb{F}}^ n\) is polynomial \((U^ t\) is the set of all \(x\in {\mathbb{F}}^ n\) such that (t,x)\(\in \Omega).\) The main result is that if \(\phi\) is a polynomial flow, there is a linear Nth-order ordinary differential equation with constant coefficients \((2)\quad y^{(N)}-\sum^{N-1}_{j=0}c^ jy^{(j)}=0\) such that for each x the solution \(\phi_ x\) of (1) satisfies (2). The algebraic version of this result is presented, too. From this, conclusions about the possible dynamics of polynomial flows are drawn. It is also shown how point spectra of derivations associated with polynomial vector fields can be used to identify p-f vector fields.
