The paper is a brief review of earlier work of \textit{A. A. Kirillov} and the author [J. Geom. Phys. 5, No.3, 351-363 (1988; Zbl 0698.17015)]. The closed string field configuration space is defined as the dual of the space of semi-infinite string differential forms. The latter are a generalization of the construction of \textit{T. Banks} and \textit{M. Peskin} [Nucl. Phys. B 264, 513-547 (1986)] in that they depend not only on the string coordinate functions but also on an entire function on the unit disk representing a complex structure of the space of functions from \(S^ 1\) to \(R^{26}\). Using the co-BRS operator involving the ``ghost'' vector fields dual to the string one-forms, an action for the free string field is defined. Physical implications are not discussed.
