Let X be a rank one Riemannian symmetric space, G the associated Lie group, \(\Gamma\) a cofinite subgroup of G, \(\chi\) a finite-dimensional unitary representation of \(\Gamma\) and L the Laplacian for the G- invariant metric on X. The author considers the automorphic Schrödinger operator \(A_ q=-L+q\) on \(L_ 2(\Gamma \setminus X;V;d\mu)\) where q is a \(\Gamma\)-invariant function on X, V the representation space of \(\chi\) and \(\mu\) the G-invariant measure on X. Three special cases are considered: {\S} 1. \(\Gamma\setminus X\) is compact, \(q\geq 0\). Then \(A_ q\) is nonnegative and essentially self-adjoint and has a purely discrete spectrum. The resolvent of \(A_ q\) is constructed by perturbation- theoretic methods. The resolvent kernel for a normal subgroup \({\overset \circ \Gamma}\) of finite index in \(\Gamma\) and \(\chi| {\overset \circ \Gamma}=1\) is expressed as a linear combination of the resolvent kernels for \(\Gamma\),\(\chi\), where \(\chi\) ranges over the set of irreducible unitary representations of \({\overset \circ \Gamma}\setminus \Gamma\). The main result is a version of the Selberg trace formula and the introduction of a zeta-function of Selberg's type. {\S} 2. \(\Gamma\setminus X\) is noncompact of finite volume, and q vanishes rapidly near the parabolic cusps. The necessary information on the eigenfunction expansion is drawn from \textit{L. D. Faddeev}'s method [Tr. Mosk. Mat. O.-va 17, 323-350 (1967; Zbl 0201.416)]. For reasons of space, the author does not develop all the lengthy details, but he gives the results on the continuation and functional equation of the scattering matrix and the resolvent kernel, and he gives the corresponding version of the Selberg trace formula. {\S} 3 is essentially concerned with special examples of eigenfunctions of the automorphic Schrödinger operator for \(\Gamma\) the modular groups and \(\chi =1\). The function \(y^{12n}| \Delta (z)|^{2n}\) is an eigenfunction for the automorphic Schrödinger operator whose potential is given explicitly in terms of the (non-holomorphic) Eisenstein series of weight 2.
