In 1979 W. Ruppert proved that the idempotents in a semitopological semigroup compactification of a locally compact connected topological group are central. The author considers the idempotent structure in a compact semitopological semigroup containing an arbitrary dense subgroup. Typical results are that two idempotents commute with each other if (and only if) their product is an idempotent, and this is always the case if S is a regular semigroup. The author also answers a question of Ruppert by exhibiting a non-abelian discrete group (in fact a whole class) such that the idempotents in the weakly almost periodic compactification are central (this is far from true in general).
